A collective of Aotearoa/New Zealand composers are honoring composer Martin Lodge’s legacy, premiering all-new compositions grouped under the title, AEON, the shape of which was initiated in February 2024 by Martin Lodge and Tessa Brinckman. The spirit of AEON was inspired by Shakespeare’s quote from Hamlet, “Thou know’st ’tis common; all that lives must die”, alluding to Lodge’s terminal illness. The composers are Gillian Whitehead, Michael Williams, John Psathas, Bjorn Arntsen, Eve de Castro-Robinson and Kenneth Young. Musicians include Ashley Brown, Lara Hall, Jonathan Jung, the Jade String Quartet and Tessa Brinckman. The pieces will be recorded for Rattle Records and SOUNZ the following day.
