“And When I Dream You Shall Know” @ MISE-EN_PLACE, Brooklyn NY

Flutist Tessa Brinckman and pianist Kathleen Supové perform “And When I Dream You Shall Know”, an ambient and fierce program of works for flute, piano, electronics, video and scent by some of today’s most lyrical and adventurous composers. Perfumer and interdisciplinary artist filmmaker Alexis Karl will provide olfactory mysteries to entwine with the performance.

Linda Marcel’s work Merging embraces the dynamic synergy between composer and performer, creating new video for this performance. Rebekah Driscoll’s Iwa Ni is inspired by the Japanese poet Basho. Whitney George has re-conceived When I Dream, I Dream of You especially for the duo, with additional video by Tessa Brinckman. Beata Moon’s piano solo Guernica was written as a response to war. And You Shall Know the Brilliance of the Dawn is a short piano work by acclaimed Iranian composer, Niloufar Nourbakhsh. Marti Epstein’s substantial work for flute and piano, And, was written for flutist Marianne Gedigian. Cameroonian composer Elsa M’bala was commissioned by Midori Samson to create graphic score eins (for graphic score and fixed audio) as part of her Bassoon Music from Africa Project. Tessa Brinckman’s video/instrumental score Giant Sleep – Maps offers both a brief respite from, and engagement with, the terrors of being alive within our time. Kathleen Supové’s new piano solo, Lavender Lake, offers bluesy melancholy, a play on the toxic Gowanus Canal’s nickname.

The duo have collaborated since 2020, including recording South African composers on the acclaimed album, “Take Wing, Roll Back” (New Focus Recordings 2024), and performing a concert as the trio, Maverick Offspring, with violist Stephanie Griffin.

This concert is made possible by a New York Women Composers 2024 Seed Grant, and the curational support of Melinda Faylor at Mise-en_Place.
